FEBRUARY 2009 … OBEY WITHOUT DELAY
"Without delay I hurry to obey Your commandments" (Ps 119:60)

OBEDIENCE

I searched through dictionaries for a definition of obedience, and this is some of the things that I found:
Obedience is:
· to carry out or fulfil a command, an order, or an instruction
· the act of submitting; the act of surrendering power to another, usually in a humble manner
· the trait of being willing to yield to the will of another person or a superior force.

OBEY WITHOUT DELAY
If we speak about obedience to God it is about willingly submitting to Him, it is about yielding to His will, it is about doing what HE wants, it is about doing the things that will please Him. God always gives us a choice to be obedient …

Do YOU choose obedience?
I have decided to obey your laws until the day I die. (Ps 119:112)

FAITH IS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT OBEDIENCE
So then, as the body without the spirit is dead, also faith without actions is dead. (James 2:26)
The Bible says about Abraham that his faith was shown to be genuine by what he did. (see James 2:21-22) - what he DID was to obey God to sacrifice his son, Isaac.
When God's children obey Him, and His commandments and laws, we prove that we have faith and that we trust Him.

Obedience is based on believing God. We can say that our motivation for obedience to God is our faith in Him. You should not only believe that He exists, and that He is who He says He is, but believe and trust Him enough that you are willing to have Him rule your life.

The example of Noah:
"It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God .." (Heb 11:7)
The example of Abraham:
It was by faith that Abraham obeyed God when God called him … (Heb 11:8)
The example of Israel:
It was by faith that the people of Israel went right through the Red Sea (Heb 11:29)

OBEDIENCE: THE KEY TO YOUR LIFE
"Today I have given you the choice between life and death … choose life. You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying Him, and committing yourself firmly to Him. This is the key to your life" (Deut 30:19-20)

OBEDIENCE FOLLOW NATURALLY
You cannot obey God if you do not trust Him and believe in Him. You cannot trust Him if you don't love Him, and you cannot love Him if you don't know Him.

When we obey God, we are sure that we know Him. But if we claim to know Him and don't obey Him, we are lying and the truth isn't in our hearts. We truly love God only when we obey Him as we should, and then we know that we belong to Him. (1John 2:3-5)

You see, when we love the Lord, obedience will follow naturally. When you are hungry, you will eat; when you are thirsty, you will drink; in the same way: if you love Jesus, you will obey Him.

For our love for God means that we obey His commands. (1John 5:3)

IF YOU LOVE ME - YOU WILL OBEY ME
See how many times Jesus repeats this truth in John 14 & 15:

· If you love Me, you will obey My commandments (John 14:15)
· Those who accept My commandments and obey them are the ones who love Me. (John 14: 21)
· Those who love Me will obey My teaching. (John 14: 23)
· Those who do not love Me do not obey My teaching (John 14:24)
· If you obey My commands, you will remain in My love (John 15:10)
· And you are my friends if you do what I command you. (John 15:14)

BE OBEDIENT IN …
My obedience to the Lord includes the following aspects:
· God must be more important to me than any relationship, activity, achievement, position or possession.
· I have to commit myself to Him
· I have to strive to study and know His Word so that it can become the foundation and guideline of everything I do and think.
· I have to acknowledge that all my talents and abilities, my body and my strength are given to me by God, and therefore I have to use it according to His rules - only then will it gives me pleasure and fulfillment.
· To serve God and my fellow man should be the purpose of my life.

OBEDIENCE IS NOT DIFFICULT
Sometimes we feel that it is impossible to be obedient to God - the more I try, the more I fail. Take heart -

He gives us a Helper:

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. He is the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God. (Joh 14:16-17)

As children of God we have the Holy Spirit in us. He is the One who teaches us right from wrong, He is the One who helps us to remember everything that we need to know in order to do God's will. (see John 14:26)

Those who obey their human nature cannot please God. But you do not live as your human nature tells you to; instead, you live as the Spirit tells you to. (Rom 8:8-9)

He gives us an obedient heart:

God also promised His children who commit themselves to Him an obedient heart. It is as if He writes His laws on my heart, so that I can be able to obey. (see Ps 40:8)

I will give them a new heart and a new mind. I will take away their stubborn heart of stone and will give them an obedient heart. Then they will keep My laws and faithfully obey all My commands. (Eze 11:19-20)

His commandments are not too hard for us:

For our love for God means that we obey His commands. And His commands are not too hard for us, because every child of God is able to defeat the world. And we win the victory over the world by means of our faith. (1John 5:3-4)

"The command that I am giving you today is not too difficult or beyond your reach. It is not up in the sky. You do not have to ask, 'Who will go up and bring it down for us, so that we can hear it and obey it?' Nor is it on the other side of the ocean. You do not have to ask, 'Who will go across the ocean and bring it to us, so that we may hear it and obey it?' No, it is here with you. (Deut 30:11-14)

HEAR AND OBEY …
Once we heard the Word of God, we have to obey it. Don't just listen and forget .

If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are. They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like. But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice---you will be blessed by God in what you do. (Jam 1:23-25)

Jesus said: Listen, then, if you have ears! (Mat 11:15)

You know it and can quote it, so now obey it. (Deut 30:14 )

DISOBEDIENCE
Disobedience is actually rebellion against God, it is to reject His will for your life.

But if you disobey and refuse to listen, … you will be destroyed - I warn you here and now. (Deut 30:17-18)

OBEY EVERY DETAIL
I see in the Bible that every detail of God's law is important, and we need to be serious about every item as well - as Noah: "And Noah did everything that the Lord commanded" (Gen 7:5)

Whoever breaks one commandment is guilty of breaking them all. (James 2:1)

… and make sure that you obey the whole Law that My servant Moses gave you. Do not neglect any part of it and you will succeed wherever you go. (Jos 1:7 )

OBEDIENCE IS BETTER THAN ANY SACRIFICE
Nothing that we can do is more pleasing to God than our obedience:

Sacrifices and offerings are not what please You … But You made me willing to listen and obey. (Ps 40:6)

Does the LORD really want sacrifices and offerings? No! He doesn't want your sacrifices. He wants you to obey Him. (1Sam 15:22)

BLESSINGS OF OBEDIENCE
When we live in obedience to God, we will reap blessings like:

Happiness:
Happy are those who follow His commands, who obey Him with all their heart. (Ps 119:2)

A pure life:
How can young people keep their lives pure? By obeying your commands. (Ps 119:9)

Freedom:
I will live in perfect freedom, because I try to obey your teachings. (Ps 119:45)

Success:
… make sure that you obey everything … Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Jos 1:8)

BE OBEDIENT WITH PLEASURE
If you choose to obey God, do it with an attitude of love and respect, (Ps 119:48), delight (Ps 119:14), pleasure (Ps 119:47), happiness (Ps 119:1), willingness.

COMPLETE OBEDIENCE
The Bible uses words like serious obedience (Matt 7:21), totally obedient ( 1 Kings 8:61), wholehearted obedience (1 Kings 8:23), complete obedience (Col 4:12) - I believe this is what God expects from His children…. Come on, lets hurry, without delay to obey Him.

I will always obey your law, forever and ever. (Ps 119:44)
